I wrote this book to help children understand how to use comparative language. By weaving this into an exciting story, children are exposed to new language whilst enjoying the beautifully illustrated pictures and adorable characters. The fact pages at the end of the book provide children with information about the rainforest and the animals in the story.

The story is about a lovable Toucan who wants to be the best at something. With the help of his friend the Blue Morpho butterfly, he realises he is perfect just as he is. This sends an important message to children about celebrating their unique qualities and to not compare themselves to others. I am conscious that children can be overwhelmed with social media, so it’s important that they value who they are.

My Story

As an educator for over 30 years, I have read hundreds of books to children of all ages, including my own two children. Every child has a favourite book which they will remember for years to come and will read repeatedly. I read ‘Peace at last’ night after night for weeks to my children, they never tired of hearing the same story!  When introducing new stories, I am always intrigued to see how children react. I can tell instantly if the book is a hit, by their engagement, facial expressions, and questions.

As part of my education research project, I studied the impact of teaching reading skills to older children through picture books. Children in Key Stage 2 still love picture books and as the text becomes less of a barrier, other skills such as inference, deduction and character analysis can become the focus of the learning. Picture books are very powerful in many ways and should not remain exclusive to younger children!
